MAUI, HAWAIʻI — October 14, 2026
Customers ordering products shipped to or from Hawaiʻi may need to plan further ahead this holiday season following significant changes to United States Postal Service delivery expectations that took effect October 1, 2026.
USPS has revised its service expectations for Priority Mail and Ground Advantage packages traveling between the continental United States and Hawaiʻi, Alaska, and certain U.S. territories.
Under the new standards, USPS Ground Advantage packages traveling between Hawaiʻi and the contiguous United States now have a delivery expectation of 10 or more business days, compared with the previous general estimate of two to five business days. Some routes may take considerably longer.
USPS Priority Mail delivery expectations for packages traveling to and from Hawaiʻi have also been adjusted from two to three business days to two to four business days. These are estimated delivery times, not guarantees.
Importantly, these changes apply in both directions. Hawaiʻi residents ordering products from mainland businesses may experience the same extended Ground Advantage delivery times as mainland customers purchasing products shipped from the islands.
The Postal Service says the adjustments are intended to provide more realistic delivery expectations and better align with its transportation operations.
What Does Surface Transportation Mean for Hawaiʻi?
One of the most significant changes involves how USPS Ground Advantage packages are transported.
Under the revised guidelines, these packages will primarily travel by surface transportation rather than air.
For packages traveling between Hawaiʻi and the mainland, surface transportation means crossing the Pacific Ocean by ship rather than airplane.
Unlike shipments traveling entirely within the mainland United States, packages moving between Hawaiʻi and the mainland cannot simply be transported by truck. They must cross more than 2,000 miles of ocean before continuing through the mainland transportation network.
Heavier Ground Advantage packages were already generally transported by ship. The October 1 change aligns lighter packages, which previously could travel by air, with the transportation methods used for heavier shipments.
Ocean transportation involves vessel schedules, time at sea, unloading, sorting, and additional transportation before packages reach their final destinations.
For customers accustomed to receiving packages from Hawaiʻi within just a few days, the change represents a significant adjustment in delivery expectations.
Maui Retailer Reports Unusual Tracking Delays
Hawaiian Store, a Maui-based online retailer shipping Hawaiian products nationwide, reports an unusual pattern in its outgoing shipments since the October 1 changes took effect.
As of October 14, every recent shipment the business has checked continues to show Honolulu as its last recorded location in USPS tracking, including packages mailed approximately a week earlier.
According to Hawaiian Store, this is noticeably different from the tracking patterns typically observed with its outgoing packages.
However, a package showing Honolulu as its last recorded tracking location does not necessarily mean it is still physically there.
Based on the retailer's shipping experience, tracking information often does not update during the ocean crossing. In some cases, the next tracking activity does not appear until a package reaches a processing facility on the mainland.
As a result, customers may see tracking information remain unchanged for days, even though their packages could already be moving toward their destinations.
Delivery Estimates on Major Online Shopping Platforms May Not Reflect New USPS Shipping Times
Another concern for customers is the significant difference between estimated delivery dates displayed by major online shopping platforms and the updated estimates provided through USPS tracking.
Hawaiian Store reports observing substantial discrepancies between delivery dates displayed when customers place their orders and the estimates subsequently provided by USPS.
In one recent example, an order shipped on October 7, displayed an expected delivery date of October 13–14. However, USPS tracking for that same shipment subsequently showed an estimated arrival date of November 2 — nearly three weeks later.
Historically, many Hawaiian Store orders arrived ahead of their estimated delivery dates because the business typically processes and ships orders within one business day.
Based on the shipments reviewed by Hawaiian Store, some online delivery estimates are currently providing customers with considerably shorter delivery windows than those shown in USPS tracking.
These observations do not establish that all online shopping platforms or shipments are affected in the same way. However, they illustrate why customers should be cautious about relying exclusively on estimated delivery dates displayed during checkout.
As online retailers and shipping platforms adjust to the revised USPS expectations, customers should be aware that delivery estimates may change significantly after their orders have shipped.
Holiday Shoppers Encouraged to Order Early
With the holiday shopping season approaching, customers purchasing gifts shipped either to or from Hawaiʻi should allow considerably more time for delivery than in previous years.
USPS service expectations are not guaranteed delivery dates. Actual transit times may vary depending on destination, transportation schedules, processing operations, and other factors.
For customers needing faster delivery, alternative shipping options may be available.
Hawaiian Store normally offers free shipping but encourages customers requiring faster service to contact the business before placing an order.
FedEx and USPS Priority Mail shipping can be arranged for an additional charge above the store's normal free shipping service.
Priority Mail generally provides shorter expected delivery times than Ground Advantage, although delays remain possible and delivery dates cannot be guaranteed.
Planning Ahead Is More Important Than Ever
The changes arrive just as the holiday shopping season begins, creating additional challenges for Hawaiʻi businesses and customers who depend on timely package deliveries.
While businesses can continue processing and shipping orders promptly, they have no control over transportation schedules or the time packages spend moving through the postal network.
The revised shipping expectations are particularly important for Hawaiʻi residents who rely on mainland retailers for everyday purchases, as well as customers across the country ordering Hawaiian gifts, specialty foods, and island products.
Whether you're sending a little aloha from Hawaiʻi or waiting for a package to arrive in the islands, the message this holiday season is simple: Order early and allow plenty of extra time for delivery.
